CPU3D Exclusive: How to Crossfire Radeon HD3870 with HD3850

ATi's latest Catalyst v8.1 drivers have been released, and the word on the street is that you can mix two totally different Radeon HD38xx cards from different manufacturers in Crossfire mode. What's even better, is that the results you get is almost as good as, if you had two matching HD3870 cards. So, is this true? Our CPU3D review team will show you how it's done.

Radeon HD3870 Crossfired with HD3850

"For current Radeon HD3870 owners, it's an extremely affordable way of boosting your performance just by getting hold of a cheaper HD3850 card. "

Yahoo shareholders furious after Microsoft rejection
Posted by Paul Lawton   on Monday, 11 February 2008. 11:44 GMT

The Inquirer

"SEARCH outfit Yahoo is facing a shareholder revolt after rejecting a $44.6 billion takeover bid from Microsoft over the weekend.

Shareholders are already miffed at the way that the board had been running Yahoo after losing 40 per cent of the value of the company over the last year.

Microsoft has two options now. It can up its bid, and risk annoying its own shareholders, or spark a shareholder revolt. This will involve spear-heading an attack to oust Yahoo's board."

Game makers hit out at Apple
Posted by Paul Lawton   on Monday, 11 February 2008. 11:41 GMT

Theinquirer

"GAME MAKERS have hit out at the Apple for being a bit silly about the way it controls graphics hardware. Many of them see that Apple could easily be kicking some pastel coloured bottom in the games area but its insistence on tight hardware controls are killing it off.

Oliver Buchmann of Application Systems Heidelberg, a company that does offer games for Macs, told Earth Times that Apple has refused to allow graphics cards for games to be installed in its machines.

The current rate of game development requires a serious game user to upgrade graphics cards once a year and run two graphics cards in the same machine.

However Apple ownership forbids this, mostly because their design forbids two graphics cards and while specialists will install good games cards under the bonnet this means chucking your Apple warranty out the window.

So those games developers who are brave enough to take a punt at the Apple games market have to do without things like DirectX which is a mainstay of the industry. Dual booting is an option for Mac users, but that is still a nuisance to reboot the computer just to play a game.

The thing is that Apple's target market are the same age group that play games. It is killing this market just because it does not want people installing graphics cards that are not blessed by the sainted Steve Jobs"

"Sony Ericsson kicked off its presentation at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona with quite a bang by announcing that it would feature Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system on future handsets. The first handset from Sony Ericsson to feature Windows Mobile will be the XPERIA X1, currently scheduled for the second half of 2008 with a planned release in select markets.

The XPERIA X1 will mark the first ever handset from Sony Ericsson to carry Windows Mobile. For Microsoft, it will mean that five of the top handset manufacturers will now be utilising its operating system.

Sony Ericsson executive Steve Walker says "In the case of the X1, Microsoft gives us an opportunity to build on", and build on it they have. Taking the core operating system, Sony Ericsson has added many features unique to itself including a whole new interface to make Windows Mobile provide a better user experience."

Anandtech Interview with PC Power & Cooling Founder
Posted by Paul Lawton   on Monday, 11 February 2008. 11:34 GMT

AnandTech

"Not long ago we had a long talk with PC Power & Cooling founder Doug Dodson about power supplies and the question came up why there aren't lower wattage power supplies with enough PEG connectors to support higher end graphics card setups. The reason why will be answered shortly but Doug also agreed to build us a custom power supply based on the newly introduced Turbo Cool 860. The article about that power supply is already online, and as a follow-up we wanted to post this interview."

Christoph on the left and Doug on the right
For the curious, that's Christoph on the left and Doug on the right…

"We met Doug and the PC Power / OCZ crew at this year's CES show in Las Vegas, and he took the time to answer a few questions we had. We have three topics to cover: Technology, Markets, and Work. These will concentrate respectively on the technology offered by PC Power & Cooling, the newly extended markets created by the acquisition from OCZ, and how the work changed during this time until today."

Dell dumping AMD? Dell ceases online sales of AMD-based PCs
Posted by Dean Vincent   on Monday, 11 February 2008. 00:27 GMT

Dell dumping AMD?

"Chicago (IL) – Dell has slimmed down its product line using AMD processors, triggering a wave of speculation that Dell may actually be phasing out its partnership with AMD. The CPU manufacturer however claims that what can be seen on Dell’s website right now is the result of a changing product mix, apparently into retail.

Friday wasn’t a particularly good news day for AMD. Reports that Dell has removed many AMD systems from its website caught the manufacturer on the wrong foot. The stock price took another hit and dropped to $6.30 in Friday after hours trading. The firm’s current market cap is about $3.65 billion.

AMD tried to control the damage and released a statement on Friday, stating that “AMD and Dell continue to enjoy a strong partnership and AMD is pleased with the growth ramp we are experiencing with Dell.”

“Dell indicates it sees significant growth opportunities in retail with AMD, and is in the process of redistributing its product mix as it does from time-to-time. In addition to several AMD-processor based Dell notebooks and desktops now available in retail, consumers and businesses may purchase AMD-based desktop and notebook systems on Dell.com, as well as a wide range of AMD-powered server solutions via Dell.com as well as its other direct channels,” the statement read."

AMD/ATi alliance fails to create nvidia "killer"

AMD/ATi alliance fails to create nvidia "killer"

"AMD/ATi have released a new crop of graphic cards, the HD3850, 3870 and 3870×2. Comparable nvidia cards would include the Geforce 8800GTS, 8800GT and 8800GTX. Nvidia has its 9 series in the works, the first of which is expected to be the 9800 series. Most people would look at the $200 price range for a graphics card. How do ATi and nvidia fair in this category? Let’s find out.

All tests were run using 3Dmark06 basic edition. The patch for the Phenom 9600 TLB error was disabled and both cards were used in a PCIe 1.0 slot. Power settings within Vista were set to “Maximum Performance.”

With these settings the HD3850 when overclocked to the maximum core and clock rate managed to score 9150 in 3Dmark06 basic. The Geforce 8800GTS that’s one year old managed a score of 8399. That’s a difference of 751 points. At these scores, it’s not even worth mentioning."

Microsoft Seals Cracks

Microsoft Seals Cracks

"With the impending release of Service Pack 1 for Vista, Microsoft looks to slow down the pirates by cutting off two popular hacks to circumvent the Windows Genuine Advantage Program.

Testing both these methods of circumventing Windows activation and Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) has shown me that SP1 effectively ignores both these hacks. Systems that previously were shown to be genuine prior to the installation of SP1 then require activation - and if the system isn’t activated it is marked at non-genuine and enters the nag state.

Are Microsoft stepping up in the world to prevent hackers reveiving the most from the new operating system, Windows Vista? We are soon to find out!"

With this awesome news, hopefully everyone can back to their hobbies with no problems at all, but will more problems be coming soon?"

Yahoo 'to reject Microsoft offer'
Posted by Winston Chim   on Sunday, 10 February 2008. 19:04 GMT

BBC

"Yahoo has reportedly decided to reject Microsoft's unsolicited takeover offer. Several newspapers and news agencies say Yahoo's board will on Monday dismiss the $44.6bn (£22.9bn) offer as being inadequate.

When it was made, Microsoft's $31 a share offer was 62% above the level at which Yahoo's shares were trading. Yahoo's shares closed on Friday at $29.20, which may suggest doubt that the offer will be successful or that a higher price will be offered. A source quoted by the Wall Street Journal said that Yahoo's board would be unlikely to consider anything below $40 per share.

A $40 a share offer would be a 109% premium to the $19.18 closing price of Yahoo's shares the day before the original offer was announced."
