Microfiber fabric makes its own electricity?
Posted by Paul Lawton   on Thursday, 14 February 2008. 10:57 GMT

Reuters

"U.S. scientists have developed a microfiber fabric that generates its own electricity, making enough current to recharge a cell phone or ensure that a small MP3 music player never runs out of power.

If made into a shirt, the fabric could harness power from its wearer simply walking around or even from a slight breeze, they reported Wednesday in the journal Nature.

"The fiber-based nanogenerator would be a simple and economical way to harvest energy from the physical movement," Zhong Lin Wang of the Georgia Institute of Technology, who led the study, said in a statement."

Rep. Markey offers net-neutrality bill
Posted by Paul Lawton   on Thursday, 14 February 2008. 00:14 GMT

Reuters

"Legislation designed to prevent broadband Internet providers from unreasonable interference with subscribers' access to content was introduced on Wednesday by a senior U.S. lawmaker.

The bill offered by U.S. Rep. Edward Markey is the latest to raise concerns about "net neutrality," an issue that pits open-Internet advocates against some service providers such as Comcast Corp, who say they need to take reasonable steps to manage traffic on their networks.

Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat, said his bill was aimed at preserving the "open architecture" of the Internet and preventing content providers from being subjected to "unreasonably discriminatory practices by broadband network providers."

"Our goal is to ensure that the next generation of Internet innovators will have the same opportunity, the same unfettered access to Internet content, services and applications that fostered the developers of Yahoo, Netscape and Google," Markey said in a statement."

Mozilla unveils Firefox 3 Beta 3

Mozilla unveils Firefox 3 Beta 3

"Mozilla is inching near the release of the next major iteration of its popular Firefox web browser. As expected, the organization has unveiled the third beta release of Firefox 3. The new release isn't quite complete and bug-free, and it's aimed largely at developers and enthusiasts, but it nonetheless gives a good idea of what's in store for the final Firefox 3.0 release.

Firefox 3 Beta 3 introduces new user interfaces tailored to Windows Vista, Windows XP, Linux, and Mac OS X. The browser features a different theme for each operating system, attempting to mirror Internet Explorer 7 on Windows and Safari on OS X. There's also a new download manager, improved plug-in and add-on management, one-click site information, better malware protection, fancier address bar auto-complete, and the promise of improved performance as well as lower memory utilization. The folks at Ars Technica have a quick walkthrough of the Beta 3 release here with some screenshots to show how the browser looks in different OSes.

Those interested in taking Beta 3 for a spin can download it from this page for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux in more than 30 languages. This being beta software, we suggest that users exercise caution. Firefox 2 users should probably back up their profile directory before installing Firefox 3 Beta 3.

Mozilla Firefox seems to have an aim to take out internet explorer, we're soon to see if they succeed!"

Investor says Microsoft's Yahoo offer high enough
Posted by Paul Lawton   on Thursday, 14 February 2008. 00:11 GMT

Reuters

"Money Manager Bob Olstein, who owns about one million shares of Microsoft Corp, is urging the company to resist pressure to raise its $31 dollar per share offer for Yahoo Inc and to make it an all-cash deal.

"Under no circumstances should you raise your price," Olstein said in a letter to Microsoft chief financial officer Christopher Liddell, dated February 12 and made public on Wednesday.

"We believe your recent offer for Yahoo is materially above Yahoo's value as an independent company," Olstein said. The Microsoft offer is valued at about $42 billion.

Olstein, known as a careful money manager who pays close attention to accounting issues, calculated that an all-stock deal would dilute Microsoft's earnings by 19 cents per share. An all-cash deal would dilute Microsoft earnings by a more modest 7 cents per share, he said.

Yahoo has already rejected the offer, saying it does not reflect the value of the company."

Catalyst 8.2 graphics drivers hit the web

Catalyst 8.2 graphics drivers hit the web

"A new set of Catalyst graphics drivers is available for users of AMD's Radeon and Radeon HD graphics cards. The new release is numbered 8.2, conforming to AMD's monthly release schedule, and it includes some performance improvements and bug fixes.

AMD claims the new drivers improve DirectX 10 performance in Company of Heroes by as much as 20% on Radeon HD 2000- and 3000-series graphics cards, and folks running those same cards in CrossFire multi-GPU setups can look forward to a performance increase of as much as 30% in the same title. As for bugs, AMD has resolved issues pertaining to level editing in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, flickering and missing objects in World of Warcraft's OpenGL mode, display corruption when running Doom 3 at high resolutions in CrossFire mode, HDMI audio stutter, and other miscellaneous issues, including a couple with the Catalyst Control Center."

Nvidia's APX 2500 mobile processor runs Quake 3
Posted by Dean Vincent   on Thursday, 14 February 2008. 00:08 GMT

Nvidia's APX 2500 mobile processor runs Quake 3

"On Monday, Nvidia announced its first applications processor for handheld devices. The APX 2500 combines an ARM11 microprocessor core, an HD audio/video processor, and a GeForce graphics processor with OpenGL ES 2.0 and Direct3D Mobile support. Nvidia claims the product can play 720p video and render snazzy 3D user interfaces, although the company gave few details in its official press release.

However, Engadget Mobile was able to put part of that claim to the test today during a hands-on session with an APX 2500-based prototype at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. The physical system is just as Nvidia pictured it, but what's more interesting is what the device can actually handle. Engadget Mobile was apparently able to play Quake 3: Arena, and it has photos to prove it. Supposedly, the APX 2500 runs the game "like a monster"—a nice way to one-up Google Android phone prototypes that only run Quake 1."

Nvidia completes Ageia buyout
Posted by Dean Vincent   on Thursday, 14 February 2008. 00:06 GMT

Nvidia completes Ageia buyout

"Some mergers and acquisitions take months to complete, but Nvidia's purchase of Ageia has apparently gone through a tad quicker than that. Nvidia has announced that it completed its acquisition today, barely nine days after first making the deal public.

Nvidia plans to reveal more details about the acquisition during a conference call this afternoon. Until then, all we know about Nvidia's plans is what CEO Jen-Hsun Huang stated last week: "By combining the teams that created the world's most pervasive GPU and physics engine brands, we can now bring GeForce®-accelerated PhysX to hundreds of millions of gamers around the world." In the buyout completion announcement, Nvidia reiterates that Ageia's PhysX software has been "widely adopted" in more than 140 games on the PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii.

Now that Nvidia has bought Ageia, could we expect more from Nvidia with future cards, wether they are physx cars or just graphics cards?"

Kingston DataTraveler HyperX 8GB USB Flash Drive
Posted by Paul Lawton   on Thursday, 14 February 2008. 00:01 GMT

Legit Reviews

"Kingston DataTraveler Flash Drives Go HyperX
Back in 2002, Legit Reviews was one of the first publications to look at the Kingston HyperX memory series and it seems now in 2008 the HyperX series has expanded into USB Flash Drives.  With the success of the HyperX series it would only make sense to keep the branding the same across different product series as the public now knows that the HyperX logo is reserved for the fastest products from Kingston Technology.

The Kingston DataTraveler HyperX USB Flash Drives have a read speed of 30MB/s and write speed of 20MB/sec so they certainly deserve the HyperX name as it is hands-down the fastest USB Flash drive that Kingston offers. The DataTraveler HyperX gives enthusiasts the power they want from a portable flash storage solution, while enhancing the looks of the capless Flash drive to make it more appealing to enthusiasts."
